Jeffrey Lyndon Hulliger, lost at sea in 1997, was identified through a collaboration between the Monterey County Cold Case Task Force, Sheriff's Office, and Othram genealogy lab. Hulliger disappeared at age 36 during a fishing trip off Moss Landing. In October 2021, skeletal remains were recovered by a fishing vessel, found clothed but without identification. Following a cold case investigation and DNA profiling in 2022, familial matches confirmed Hulliger's identity, while his boatmate Greg Mitchell remains missing after the incident.
The joint-agency effort, including the Monterey County District Attorney's Office Cold Case Task Force, Sheriff's Office Coroner Division, and Othram, identified human remains as Jeffrey Lyndon Hulliger, lost at sea in 1997.
Partial skeletal remains were recovered in 2021 by a commercial fishing vessel. The body was found clothed and carried no identification, only five keys and two coins.
Advanced DNA analysis by Othram in 2022 led to identifying Hulliger as a match through familial DNA testing, confirming his identity after decades of uncertainty.
Hulliger and his friend, Greg Mitchell, disappeared during a fishing trip in 1997, and while Hulliger's remains were finally identified, Mitchell still remains missing.
