In a recent unfolding case, the remains of a man discovered in Northern California in 1988, initially unidentified after being uncovered by tree trimmers, have now been linked to Paul Richard Davis. This execution-style killing drew attention when tree workers found bones while clearing vegetation, prompting police involvement. Through advancements in forensic science and genetic genealogy, investigators determined that Davis, who was homeless at the time, had been buried between 1985 and 1986, ultimately leading to confirmation by family DNA matches in 2024.
"It looks like he was beat up, shot, and dumped," a sheriff's deputy told the Feather River Bulletin in 1988.
The profile they developed was sent to the FBI, which used genetic genealogy to search for possible familial matches.
Little is known about Davis. Family members said he was homeless and struggled with substances.
Experts determined the body was likely buried between 1985 and 1986 based on when the roots had been cut.
