California man dies after rescue on Kauai's Kalalau Trail
First responders were notified Tuesday around 4 p.m. that a 37-year-old man was unconscious on the Kalalau Trail at Crawler’s Ledge. The area is known for steep cliffs, slippery slopes, and a narrow route where hikers sometimes crawl, leading to the nickname. Bystanders provided CPR until the Kauai Fire Department arrived by helicopter. Responders continued lifesaving efforts and airlifted the man to the nearest hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. An autopsy is pending, and foul play is not suspected. The Kauai Police Department is seeking witnesses. The Kalalau Trail is described as among the islands’ most dangerous, with frequent rescues and signs indicating about 100 victims, plus some missing people.
