'Breaking my heart': Berkeley says goodbye to Rick & Ann's
Briefly

Rick & Ann's in Berkeley will close on Aug. 31 as owner Ann Lauer retires after 36 years. The restaurant built a reputation for singular breakfast and lunch dishes and once offered farm-to-table dinners upstairs. Longtime customers regularly return for signature items like orange-rice flour pancakes and a red flannel hash of beets, sweet potatoes and bacon. The restaurant fostered a close-knit staff and customer community, with family members working together and patrons bringing homemade goods. Regulars express sadness and appreciation for consistent food, prompt service, and the loss of a neighborhood institution.
The food is excellent. The service is excellent,
You get your food quickly. It's always consistent. I love the menu. They do many interesting things.
I'm really sad. There's just no place like it. So many of the old places are going out and I understand all the reasons. But I will miss it.
I mean, you can order almost anything and be happy with it. I feel sad. We've had a lot of friendly associations with people here over the years.
