Berkeley pedestrian dies days after SUV driver struck him near Willard Park

A 75-year-old Berkeley man was struck by an SUV near Willard Park on Aug. 17 and died a week later. Police responded to Derby and Regent streets at 6:47 p.m. after callers reported a car hitting a pedestrian. The man was crossing Derby Street walking south when a 58-year-old Santa Clara man driving a 2010 Acura MDX westbound on Derby hit him. The pedestrian was taken to Highland Hospital with abrasions and cuts and remained hospitalized until his death. The cause of death has not been determined. The crash remains under investigation and the driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating. Berkeley has recorded two pedestrian deaths from motorists so far this year.

Police officers went to Derby and Regent streets, on the north side of the park, at 6:47 p.m. after callers reported a car hitting a pedestrian, Berkeley police spokesperson Officer Jessica Perry said in an email.
The man had been crossing Derby Street, walking south, when a 58-year-old Santa Clara man driving a 2010 Acura MDX westbound on Derby hit him, Perry said. The 75-year-old was taken to Highland Hospital with abrasions and cuts from the collision, Perry said. He remained hospitalized until he died Sunday. The man's cause of death has not been determined, police said. As such, nobody in authority has yet directly attributed his death to the crash.
