The California Department of Insurance has charged four residents with insurance fraud and conspiracy after a man was caught wearing a bear costume to file phony claims. They claimed a bear caused damage to multiple luxury vehicles, leading to payouts of over $141,000, but investigations revealed their ruse.
Allison Hensley, deputy press secretary of the California Department of Insurance, commented on the case, saying, 'This is definitely unique, but we have seen, through our cases, that people will do a lot of things to try and get an undeserved insurance payout.'
The scheme came to light when an insurance company flagged a claim that seemed suspicious, specifically regarding a Rolls-Royce Ghost allegedly damaged by a bear, but it turned out to be staged.
Detectives discovered that the accused had filed two additional claims involving Mercedes, similarly claiming bear damage, highlighting a recurring theme of deceit in their filings.
