
"SANTA CRUZ The victim of a Sunday morning crash at the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf that resulted in a vehicle driving through the railing and into the Monterey Bay has been identified as William Westerman, 65, of Scotts Valley. The Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office confirmed Westerman's identity Monday afternoon. On Monday, lilies had been placed at the spot on the wharf where the vehicle drove through the railing and a crew from the city of Santa Cruz was working to repair the damage."

William Westerman, 65, of Scotts Valley was identified as the driver whose van drove through the railing of the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf into Monterey Bay on Sunday morning. Multiple Santa Cruz County public safety agencies, including Coast Guard and Harbor Patrol vessels, responded and crews extricated Westerman and a dog from the submerged vehicle. Westerman was transported to Dominican Hospital and was declared dead shortly thereafter. A fuel slick spread toward the wharf. A diver secured the van with straps for recovery, and a towing crew raised a Toyota Sienna van back onto the wharf. Lilies were placed at the crash site and city crews repaired the railing damage.
