"The National Weather Service said the storm center continued to develop early Wednesday northwest of San Francisco, and it will bring with it a strong cold front that will mix with the high pressure that's created the dry conditions of the past few days. Combined, that will produce mighty strong winds, rain, and the possibility of thunder and lightning for some areas of the region, while other covered in a rain shadow may stay relatively untouched."
"The rain that comes with it is expected to be heavy in most places and a downpour in others. The weather service said most of the region has at a 50% chance for at least an inch of rain."
A moderate-scale atmospheric river is developing northwest of San Francisco and is expected to reach the Bay Area this evening with about 24 hours of impact. A strong cold front will mix with existing land high pressure, causing rapid barometric pressure falls and increased atmospheric instability. Southerly winds of 15–25 mph with gusts to 50 mph are expected in Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo and Santa Cruz counties; Sonoma and Napa could see steady 20–30 mph winds with gusts up to 60 mph. A high-wind warning covers the North Bay and a regional wind advisory runs 10 p.m. Wednesday to 10 a.m. Thursday. Most areas face a roughly 50% chance of receiving at least an inch of rain, while Santa Clara Valley locations such as San Jose, Concord and Livermore in a rain shadow have a lower chance near 20%.
