8-year-old boy suffers concussion, broken bone after part of ceiling collapses at California school
"All I remember is when I was going out from school, the roof fell on me,"
"As he was walking by, the whole thing kind of collapsed on him. It sounded like the one piece landed on top of his head and that knocked him over. And then another piece landed on top of him after he fell,"
"We are incredibly thankful that certain things happened, part of the wall, the barrier that took part of the weight and his backpack. His books were bent in half, and they were pretty thick. So I feel he had an armor on him with his backpack,"
A portion of the ceiling stucco at Washington Elementary School's amphitheater collapsed while students were exiting. Two students were struck by falling debris and taken to a hospital; both were released the same day. An 8-year-old boy suffered a broken clavicle, concussion, and bruising and wore an arm sling and had a black eye. The school district closed the campus until Dec. 1 and arranged for engineers and an architect to inspect the building. Emergency responders and school staff provided immediate assistance, and the boy's backpack helped absorb some of the impact.
