A 71-year-old hiker from Trona was rescued after spending a night in the Big Maria Mountains. The experienced hiker, who had shared her route with a friend, went missing after failing to check in. Concerned, her friend alerted authorities, leading to a search using drones. Weather conditions hindered helicopter support, necessitating the Riverside Mountain Rescue Unit's help. Rescuers located her in good condition the following morning. The incident highlights the significance of preparedness and awareness when hiking, advising hikers to inform others of their plans and to carry adequate supplies.
"As nightfall approached, the hiker found herself low on water and still several hours from her vehicle," deputies said.
"She conserved water, did not hike after dark, and carried appropriate clothing and gear for an overnight stay," deputies said, adding that the "incident highlights the importance of proper preparation when hiking in remote areas."
