Early Thursday morning a massive fire swept through a 19-unit waterfront apartment building in San Rafael’s Canal District, fully engulfing the structure by 5:30 a.m. Eight people were injured while escaping, with some residents jumping into the water. Two people remain missing and more than 50 residents are displaced and unable to return home. Building manager Martin Hanson described waking to flames and fleeing after grabbing cash. The building had passed an inspection in July 2025. Fire officials continue an investigation into the cause, and authorities planned an update around noon Friday.
Two people are still missing, and more than 50 people can't go home because of a massive fire that ripped through a San Rafael apartment complex on Thursday.
I thought it was a fight going on. I looked out and saw flames. Through on my shirt and shorts, grabbed cash, and headed out. I was on the water side, so a lot of people had to jump into the water.
They jumped and probably landed on the ground behind the building and were rescued and brought to the front of the building and treated and transported as needed,
