"Authorities are investigating after two people were found dead inside a Bay Area liquor store that caught fire early Monday morning. Fire crews were called to Avenue Liquors on Roosevelt Avenue in Redwood City at about 5:30 a.m., the Redwood City Police Department said in a news release. When firefighters arrived, the building was "engulfed in flames," the department said. As crews were putting out the flames, they opened the roof and saw two people inside."
"The two people showed "no signs of life" and had "severe burns," police said, and they were pronounced dead at the scene. Nearby residents and store customers told the San Mateo Daily Journal that they believe the deceased were two workers. However, authorities have not identified the two people and it's unclear why they were inside the building at the time."
"The Redwood City Pulse reported that though the building's exterior wasn't heavily damaged, a "noxious" smell remained. Investigators contacted the store owner and they are cooperating with officials, police said. In a Tuesday update, police said there is no threat to the public and the fire is being investigated by the police department, Redwood City Fire Department and the San Mateo County Coroner's Office. Police said they will release updates when more information becomes available."
