A Texas man, Steven Robert Sablan, was sentenced to 35 years in federal prison for kidnapping a 13-year-old girl. He abducted her from San Antonio, drove her to California, and sexually assaulted her. The girl wrote 'Help Me!' on paper and was rescued outside a laundromat in Long Beach. Sablan pleaded guilty in January 2024 and is also required to pay restitution. The U.S Attorney emphasized the importance of protecting children, praising the collaborative efforts of law enforcement in securing justice.
The 35-year sentence imposed ensures this defendant will not have the opportunity to victimize children. There is nothing as important as protecting our young people.
[Sablan] violently abducted a child and repeatedly sexually assaulted her while driving her thousands of miles from her home.
The girl scrawled the words 'Help Me!' in red pen on a ripped piece of paper while she sat in a silver Nissan Sentra.
