In our response, we underscored that UK police forces are already utilizing a variety of data-driven technologies, such as live facial recognition, drones, and mobile phone extraction. These technologies raise significant ethical and privacy issues that warrant thorough regulatory oversight.
While we appreciate the CoP’s efforts to establish guidelines for police use of data-driven technologies, we believe that current legislation fails to provide necessary safeguards, oversight, and accountability. This creates a legislative void that can lead to misuse of such technologies by law enforcement.
Our submission highlights two primary concerns: the absence of comprehensive legislation governing the deployment of certain data-driven technologies and the need for the new APP to be applicable to technologies already in use within policing.
