UK's last coal-fired power plant to close after more than 100 years
Briefly

The UK government has hailed the closure of the Ratcliffe-on-Soar coal plant as a milestone in efforts to generate all of Britain's energy from renewable sources by 2030.
Plant manager Peter O'Grady reflected on the emotional significance of the day, noting that, when he started 36 years ago, they could not have imagined a future without coal.
UK Energy Minister Michael Shanks emphasized the importance of the coal workers' contributions over the years, stating, 'We owe generations a debt of gratitude as a country.'
With coal's contribution to electricity falling from 80% in 1990 to just 1% in 2023, Britain has significantly shifted towards renewable sources, which now account for over half of its electricity.
