"It would be detrimental to the construction industry and our labor supply and exacerbate our housing affordability problems," said Jim Tobin, CEO of the National Association of Home Builders. The hefty reliance on foreign-born workers is pivotal as they account for 30% of jobs in essential construction trades like carpentry and electrical work, making their potential deportation alarming for the industry, which already bristles under labor shortages.
"The construction sector employs an estimated 1.5 million undocumented workers, or 13% of its total workforce—larger than any other industry," according to data. The insights indicate an overreliance on this demographic, especially in Sun Belt states, where labor demand intensifies.
For Brent Taylor, home building has been a very, very difficult industry the past few years, noting that if subcontractor's employees "show up on my jobsite because they work for that company, I don't know if they're legal or not," reflecting the unavoidable complexities faced by contractors amid labor scarcity.
