Brown found freedom from corporate constraints after selling her namesake brand and recognized costly inefficiencies in layered management. She founded the original brand in 1991 at age 34 and managed every aspect, personally interviewing each hire. After selling to Estée Lauder and entering a 25-year non-compete, the brand grew more process-oriented and she became excluded from hiring decisions. She concluded that layers and excess consultants waste time, energy, and money. When launching Jones Road Beauty she removed unnecessary layers, prioritized simplicity and efficiency, embraced founder-led decision-making, and questioned traditional corporate metrics like KPIs.
