"General Motors Co. ( NYSE: GM) has just moved its headquarters from the Renaissance Center in downtown Detroit, the tallest building in Detroit, to nearby Hudson's building, once the site of one of America's largest retailers. As the Detroit News reported when GM announced its new headquarters, "Hudson's Detroit is GM's fourth headquarters in the city and comes under the leadership of two Metro Detroit natives: CEO Mary Barra and President Mark Reuss.""
"To be direct, Ford made a conscious decision not to move into the troubled city. It did overhaul a nearby building known as the Michigan Central Station. It rebuilt the disintegrating former rail station and the surrounding area. The cost of this has been pegged at $950 million. Ford could have had an impressive headquarters in Detroit by investing that amount to build its home base."
"Ford says its new headquarters will change "Ford's workspaces, as well as the employee experience." It will also change the way that Ford tests new products and improves products for its customers. Again, that does not have to happen in Dearborn. It could happen in many places in the Detroit area, including within the city limits. Ford has actually built a new campus. About 14,000 people will work in the area."
Ford moved into a new Dearborn headquarters in November and plans to demolish its 1956 Glass House. Ford invested in renovating Michigan Central Station and the surrounding area at an estimated cost of $950 million rather than relocating its main headquarters to Detroit. Ford's new campus will house about 14,000 employees and aims to change workspaces, employee experience, and product testing and improvement processes. General Motors moved its headquarters from the Renaissance Center to Hudson's building in downtown Detroit. Hudson's Detroit is GM's fourth Detroit headquarters and is led by CEO Mary Barra and President Mark Reuss.
