Electric Ireland has cut the microgeneration export tariff rate from 21c per kilowatt-hour (kWh) to 19.5c, impacting approximately 33,000 households selling excess solar energy back to the grid.
Electric Ireland's price change coincides with reductions for 1.1 million residential customers. With smart-meter plan customers receiving a 5% reduction, microgeneration rates also declined.
Daragh Cassidy from Bonkers.ie indicated that Electric Ireland's microgeneration rate cut was somewhat expected due to overall falling energy prices, marking their first reduction since relaunching the scheme.
The average savings for households with solar PV systems are estimated to be between €200 and €300 annually, further complicating the economics of solar energy in light of declining tariff rates.
