Dutch city pilots radical debt cancellation scheme for poor families

Earlier this month, municipal officials began knocking on doors in the Immerloo II district, one of the poorest neighbourhoods in the Netherlands, offering to pay off problem debts.
The pilot project aims to pay off debts for 40-60 families, prioritizing those with children, based on debt size, duration, and number of creditors, with no strings attached.
Mark Lauriks, the councillor in charge of social security at Arnhem, highlighted the failure of the current system in helping the most vulnerable families, emphasizing the detrimental impact of debts on health and well-being.
