Britain's last coal-powered electricity plant is closing after 142 years
Briefly

The closure of the Ratcliffe-on-Soar station marks a significant transition for Britain, being its last coal-fired power plant and illustrating the shift to renewable energy.
Plant manager Peter O'Grady expressed it's an emotional day, saying, 'When I started my career 36 years ago, none of us imagined a future without coal generation in our lifetimes.'
Energy Minister Michael Shanks stated the closure 'marks the end of an era' and emphasized, 'We owe generations a debt of gratitude as a country.'
With coal's share of electricity dwindling from 80% in 1990 to just 1% in 2023, Britain now largely relies on renewable sources for over half its electricity.
