Colton, who represents Gravesend, Bensonhurst, Bath Beach and Dyker Heights, charges that the city continues to lag in progress in this area, with just 31.1% of the city's public schools fully accessible as of August 2023, some 34 years after the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law.
In District 21, which includes a large portion of the area that Assemblyman Colton represents, only 22.5% of public schools operated by the city's Department of Education (DOE) meet an accessibility benchmark, according to Advocates for Children.
