The U.S. Transportation Department fined Lufthansa $4 million for denying boarding to Jewish passengers, marking the largest penalty for civil rights violations by an airline.
Investigators revealed that 128 passengers, primarily Orthodox Jewish men, were treated collectively and denied boarding due to misbehavior allegations related to just a few individuals.
Lufthansa acknowledged errors in company procedures but rejected claims of discrimination, stating that the captain's report of misbehavior triggered the denial of boarding.
The airline also provided $2 million in compensation to the affected passengers, reducing the overall fine to $2 million.
