Two men, aged 80 and 59, were killed by a hit-and-run driver in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, while crossing Third Avenue. They were struck by a dark-colored BMW sedan that fled the scene around 4:20 a.m. Emergency services pronounced both men dead at the scene. The identities of the victims are withheld pending notification of their families, and it is unclear if they knew each other. The driver remains at large. The area has seen a high number of collisions over the past five years, including fatalities.
A preliminary investigation by the department's Collision Investigation Squad found the vehicle was traveling south on Third Avenue when it struck the pedestrians and sped away.
Over the past five years, the three-block radius around the site of Friday's fatal crash has seen 59 collisions resulting in about 80 injuries.
Authorities have not said whether the victims knew each other.
Traffic collisions have killed 97 people citywide through July 7, representing a 28.7% decrease in fatal crashes compared to the same period last year.
