Premium Content: Greek festival illuminates Hellenic culture
Briefly

George Christodoulou, the festival's co-chair, expressed his passion for the festival stating, 'I grew up here in this community; I went to school here. And I do this simply because I love it. This weekend, we are celebrating the feast of our church, Holy Cross. The objective is simply for people to come out, have good memories and have a really great time.' His sentiment reflects the festival's role in fostering community bonds and celebrating cultural heritage.
Festival co-chair Demetrius Kalamaras emphasized the inclusive nature of the festival: 'It's not just for Greeks; it's the Arabic community, the Irish community. They are coming from Bensonhurst, Astoria and from Staten Island, as well.' His comment highlights the festival's importance not only to the Greek community but also to a diverse audience, creating an environment of cultural exchange and community connectivity.
Kalamaras also shared insights on the logistical challenges of organizing the festival: 'There are so many people working to put these three great days together. So many are donating their time and efforts - all the ministries, scouts, the youth committee, the ladies auxiliary and more.' This statement points to the collaborative effort required to maintain such a significant cultural event.
With expectations to attract around 10,000 attendees and raise around $100,000, Kalamaras said, 'But it really requires a lot of hustling.' This highlights the considerable work behind the scenes to ensure the festival's success and sustainability year after year.
