Residents and business owners in Brooklyn Heights are responding to the Department of Transportation's upgrades intended to enhance pedestrian safety on Montague Street. While some support the initiative to reduce car traffic, others express concerns over the limited space for loading and unloading vehicles. Business owners report difficulties with deliveries and parking, leading to increased traffic and pollution. "I already think there's enough cars out here in New York, and I think forcing people to take public transportation - it's honestly a good idea," said neighbor Mauricio Herringer.
"The streets here are as narrow as they are in Florence, Italy. This is not the Bronx, where they have triple lanes. We have this teeny-weeny little street with trucks, businesses that are struggling to make a living to begin with, who now have to deal with the loading and the unloading," said one resident.
"They took up a lot of parking for customers," Calfa said. "Customers can't stop and run into the stores. They double park and create traffic.
