Op-ed | Closing SUNY Downstate University Hospital will negatively impact borough * Brooklyn Paper
Briefly

In a statement issued by 16 department chairs at Downstate's medical school and hospital, major concerns were raised about the devastating impact on undergraduate and graduate medical education if the hospital closes, affecting the quality of instruction and experiences for medical students and residents.
Without Downstate hospital, placing residents at neighboring affiliate hospitals would become very difficult, especially due to the shortage of residency openings in crucial training programs like surgery, medicine, obstetrics, gynecology, and pediatrics.
The closure of Downstate would result in insufficient training opportunities at other hospitals for residents and fellows, negatively impacting healthcare in Brooklyn and beyond, as Downstate serves as a significant source of doctors for New York City.
