NYC to Shut Down Its Asylum Application Help Center Due to Lack of Funds
Briefly

The closure of New York City's Asylum Application Help Center, which aided thousands of migrants in filing asylum paperwork, is attributed to funding gaps. The center was established in 2023 to assist newcomers with their applications, but the city's diminishing role in managing the migrant influx is notable, as federal funds have been withdrawn. Despite a decline in migrant arrivals, 38,000 people still remain in shelters. The New York Immigration Coalition criticized the city's financial mismanagement in accessing state funds allocated for immigrant assistance.
"We are disappointed to have to make the difficult decision" to close the center, Liz Garcia, a spokeswoman for the mayor, said in a statement to the paper.
"While New York State put $4.3 billion towards assisting recent arrivals in the state budget over the last two years, the Adams administration only tapped $1.6 billion of that funding - failing to access all the resources that were made available," said Murad Awawdeh, president of the New York Immigration Coalition.
