The Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (BQE), part of I-278, is experiencing severe structural decay, especially in its cantilevered section through Brooklyn Heights, known for heavy traffic and poor driving conditions. Designed by infamous urban planner Robert Moses, the structure's integrity has deteriorated over time, raising concerns among New York's officials. As of next year, it will be prohibited from carrying trucks, reflecting the urgent need for a viable solution to its deteriorating condition. However, no alternative for maintaining adequate truck transport speed between Brooklyn and Queens has been proposed yet.
The decay of the BQE has been common knowledge amongst New York's decision makers for years, but no one's come up with a better way to ferry trucks.
By next year, the BQE will be too structurally unsound to support the semi trucks that are supposed to justify its existence.
