Groups of people seek relief from the heat under the shade of trees at Battery Park Wednesday afternoon. Maria Gonzalez, 54, said she was happy to get one last chance to soak up the rays on the beach at Coney Island before cooler weather arrives. "I'm a summer baby. I always loved the ocean, [I] just relax," said Gonzalez, who works at Citi Field and lives in Hell's Kitchen. "It'll be over before you know it."
Even though he was roasting on the beach, Ross Zheleznyak wasn't complaining about getting the chance to cool off in the ocean and enjoy the sights and sounds of the Coney Island Boardwalk. "Better than when it rains," said Zheleznyak, 39, of Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, who works for the federal Department of Homeland Security. "You're really stuck at home [and] you're gonna be really, really bored."
A scorching day at the beach helps Youssef Aaowaj refocus his mind for the workweek to come. "My favorite, the heat," said Aaowaj, 30, of Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. "Makes me relax, makes me think, gives me energy."
