New Yorkers commemorate Battle of Brooklyn day at Green-Wood cemetery
Briefly

Historians say the Battle of Brooklyn, fought at Green-Wood Cemetary, was a pivotal part of the Revolutionary War. It was the first battle fought after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, a difficult time for the Continental Army.
Judith Kalaora, founder of History at Play, emphasized the significance of the Battle of Brooklyn, noting, 'Those middle battles, those battles that really start here in New York, are really the beginnings of the American Revolution.'
Kalaora highlighted the strategic importance of New York's port, stating, 'This port of New York, which is vital: from receiving supplies, receiving reinforcements, keeping up correspondences with other colonies.'
Rachel Walman, Green-Wood's director of education, expressed the event's cultural significance: 'I love the ability where we have this open space where we can bring together so many cultural institutions, so many folks who are passionate about the American Revolution.'
