New York Expands Fair Fares Program, Moves to OMNY for Easier Transit Access
Briefly

The Fair Fares program is transitioning to OMNY, enabling low-income New Yorkers aged 18-64 to access half-priced public transit easily. Mayor Eric Adams and Commissioner Molly Wasow Park announced this initiative, which follows a successful pilot program. It simplifies fare payment and includes automatic fare capping, limiting weekly expenses to $17. New enrollees will receive Fair Fares OMNY cards for immediate use, while existing participants will transition to OMNY cards upon renewal. The second phase will allow discounts to apply on various payment methods, promoting transit equity and affordability.
By bringing our world-class Fair Fares program onto the MTA's digital OMNY system, we are making it even easier for working-class New Yorkers to access discounted rides on our trains and on our busses.
This transition not only simplifies fare payments but also helps participants save more with automatic fare capping, ensuring that no Fair Fares user pays more than $17 per week.
