'Trace/s' is an exhibition at the Center for Brooklyn History that sheds light on Brooklyn's ties to slavery, a topic often overlooked in discussions about the North's history. Through a blend of art and historical records, the exhibit honors modern Black genealogy researchers and their vital role in uncovering these legacies. It brings attention to the lives of enslaved individuals in Brooklyn, featuring poignant portraits that connect past and present, aiming to enhance awareness of the impact of slavery on the borough's development and the families shaped by it.
The story of slavery in Brooklyn is not one many people know about. People often associate slavery with the South and overlook its presence in the North.
Often, we see portraits of prominent figures with streets named after them, but we don't hear about the people their families may have enslaved- the individuals who helped build their wealth.
