"a recipe for unconstitutional chaos, with no map in place and uncertainty as to whether nominating petitions can start circulating on February 24, with no end in sight."
"racially gerrymander"
"irreparable harm"
"The Republicans' desperate appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court is both premature and improper,"
Lawyers for Rep. Nicole Malliotakis petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to block a Manhattan Supreme Court order that would redraw New York's 11th Congressional District. Manhattan Justice Jeffrey Pearlman ruled for four residents who said the current lines unlawfully dilute Black and Latino voting power. Malliotakis' petition warns the order would create "a recipe for unconstitutional chaos," delaying the start of nominating petitions on Feb. 24 and forcing a racial gerrymander. Her lawyers seek to keep the existing district map for the upcoming election. Plaintiffs' counsel Aria Branch called the appeal premature and said state courts can resolve the matter without federal interference.
