How Bushwick got its name
Briefly

The Meserole family traces its roots back to Jean Meserole, a French Huguenot who arrived in New Amsterdam in 1663. Settling first in New Utrecht, he later became a key landowner, acquiring extensive properties that would form present-day Greenpoint and parts of Williamsburg. Over generations, the family’s significant landholdings allowed them to dominate the area from 1727 to 1750. Their legacy continued through family descendants, notably Peter Meserole, whose large home stood as a testament to their prominence until its demolition in 1919.
Jean Meserole, a French Huguenot who immigrated in 1663, played a significant role in the early settlement of Brooklyn, becoming a prominent landowner.
The Meserole family, originally one of the first five families in Bushwick, owned substantial land that included much of present-day Greenpoint and Williamsburg.
