The unveiling of the Willoughby-Hart Historic District markers in Bed-Stuy took place amid community support and the aftermath of the Jacob Dangler Mansion's demolition. Local residents, officials, and landmarking groups gathered to celebrate this acknowledgment of the area's significance. The Landmarks Preservation Commission officially voted for this designation in 2024, following efforts dating back to 1992. The district encompasses over 100 houses, showcasing distinctive brownstone architectural styles that contribute to the identity of the neighborhood.
"When I see the group come together today, I'm able to see continuity. I'm able to see consistency. And I think about familiarity. I think about the neighborhood as a whole, and it is changing and I understand that. The one quote that comes to my mind is the community that was, is the community that is, is the community that will be with our help - that's it in a nutshell."
The district includes more than 100 houses and covers most of the two blocks of Willoughby Avenue and Hart Street between Nostrand and Marcy avenues. The blocks consist of historically and architecturally significant brownstone streetscapes that stand out within the broader neighborhood.
