The update of the 'Great Trees of New York City' list reflects Brooklyn's cultural landscape, showcasing trees that serve as historical touchstones for the community.
"New York City's trees represent a critical part of the cultural and historical fabric of our neighborhoods and communities," said parks department commissioner Sue Donogue.
Seventeen of the 61 new trees added to the list are in Brooklyn, celebrated for their historical significance and the affection local residents feel for them.
Many of the newly recognized trees, like those in East Flatbush, are remnants of the area's original natural landscape, linking the past with the present.
