This ongoing conflict led to 19 shootings in Sheepshead Bay and Coney Island, igniting fear among residents, particularly after the 2021 murder of 17-year-old Devonte Lewis. The suspects, some as young as 15, displayed utter disregard for life, often shooting in crowded areas. The indictments came after a two-year investigation by the NYPD's Gun Violence Suppression Division, highlighting the gangs' violent history and the recidivism of several offenders.
