The NYC Department of Transportation is advocating for the expansion of its red light camera program to improve road safety. Mayor Eric Adams announced that Verra Mobility will continue managing the city’s traffic enforcement cameras, which include speed and bus lane regulations. This decision follows a tragic accident in Brooklyn, underscoring the urgent need for stricter enforcement to combat dangerous driving. The city plans to quadruple the number of red light cameras, aiming to protect pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists by reducing crashes and unsafe behaviors.
Expanding automated enforcement cameras in New York City are a necessary step toward making our streets safer for all New Yorkers, and since the passage of this law, we've increased the use of these technologies, reducing dangerous driving behaviors and crashes, and ultimately saving lives, Adams said.
City officials said they chose Verra Mobility because of its capacity to operate large-scale camera systems and technical capabilities to expand to newer equipment.
