Construction of long-delayed Gowanus Canal CSO tank moves forward as city completes excavation * Brooklyn Paper
Briefly

A significant milestone in the Gowanus Canal Superfund cleanup has been reached with the completion of excavation for a new underground sewer overflow tank in Red Hook. This tank will hold up to 8 million gallons of rainwater and sewage during storms to protect the canal. The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) expedited the construction schedule, concluding excavation six months early in response to local resident complaints. Future construction phases portend new public parks and facilities as local environmental and community commitments remain a focus.
The creativity and innovation to speed up this stage of work demonstrates DEP's commitment to the Gowanus community, said DEP commish Rohit T. Aggarwala.
This stage was done ahead of schedule and with stringent environmental monitoring protocols, and we are optimistic for the same outcome for all the work that remains, said Andrea Parker.
