The eighth annual Coney Island Ritual Cabaret runs from March 28-30, featuring over 20 original performances focused on resistance and defiance. Organized by International Culture Lab and Coney Island USA, the festival highlights a mix of performers including actors, dancers, musicians, and puppeteers. Each piece, ranging from five to fifteen minutes, delves into political and social themes of upheaval. Gabriele Schafer, co-artistic director, emphasizes the narrative power of art in a context where facts no longer suffice to convey truths.
"Facts and statistics have never convinced anyone of anything, especially in this era of 'alternative facts,' it comes down to who tells the better story—and that's where artists come in."
The festival builds on ICL's history of politically-charged performance, exploring themes of social upheaval and rebellion through original works by diverse artists.
