On April 10, 2025, immigration advocates and NYC leaders protested Mayor Eric Adams' Executive Order 50, permitting ICE an office on Rikers Island. The City Council filed a lawsuit against the mayor's order, arguing it's unlawful due to a conflict of interest arising from a deal with the Trump administration. Speaker Adrienne Adams expressed concerns that this order endangers public safety by deterring cooperation with local police. The lawsuit aims to hold the mayor accountable and protect the rights of New Yorkers against federal overreach.
"Executive Order 50 is the poisoned fruit of Mayor Adams's deal with the Trump Administration," the petition reads.
"When New Yorkers are afraid of cooperating with our city's own police and discouraged from reporting crime and seeking help, it makes everyone in our city less safe," she said.
