Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced a 12-year prison sentence for John Carter, who shot a 20-year-old man in Sunset Park in 2022, causing life-altering injuries. The ruling emphasizes the district's commitment to addressing gun violence. The incident involved Carter and three accomplices seeking retaliation, ultimately assaulting the wrong individual. Carter, convicted on several serious charges, received the maximum penalty, while his co-defendants received lesser sentences for various crimes. Gonzalez's statement highlights the broader aim to deter violent crime in Brooklyn and ensure accountability among offenders.
Gonzalez said, "This defendant shot an unarmed 20-year-old man in the chest, leaving him with serious long-term injuries. His life will never be the same."
Carter was sentenced by Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Adam Perlmutter to 12 years in prison and five years' post-release supervision.
Barrott pleaded guilty to third-degree robbery and was sentenced to 3.5 to seven years in prison.
Gonzalez stated, "We have no tolerance for violence, and this sentence sends a clear message that gun violence in Brooklyn will be met with serious consequences."
