"During the review, we identified coffeehouses where we're unable to create the physical environment our customers and partners expect, or where we don't see a path to financial performance, and these locations will be closed,"
"We will offer generous severance and support packages, including benefits extensions,"
"We're working hard to offer transfers to nearby locations where possible and will move quickly to help partners understand what opportunities might be available to them,"
"was not a factor"
Starbucks will lay off about 900 employees and close coffeehouses across the United States as part of a North America portfolio review. Closures include dozens of New York City locations, seven in Brooklyn and multiple Manhattan stores, with some affected sites unionized. A Starbucks spokesperson said unionization was not a factor in the decision-making process. CEO Brian Niccol said the review targeted coffeehouses where the company could not create the expected physical environment or see a path to financial performance. Some non-retail positions are being cut, and Starbucks plans to offer transfers and generous severance and benefits extensions.
