In response to rising food insecurity linked to surging grocery prices in New York City, Keegan Stephan launched a community fridge outside his home in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. This initiative, operational for over a week, aims to provide fresh produce to those in need, echoing the motto 'take what you need, give what you can.' With food pantry visits skyrocketing, Stephan emphasizes the absurdity of food waste amidst hunger, advocating for food access as a human right. His efforts, supported by community volunteers, intend to maintain a consistent supply, ensuring the fridge remains a reliable resource.
There is an endless supply of food, and so much food goes to waste in the city. People are starving, and there's extra food, and the only reason they're not eating is because people have decided they need to make a profit off that food.
Now just felt like the right time, given the political climate and how under threat everybody feels, and, really feeling like I want to do something to support and protect my community.
One of the main things about running a community fridge is you always want to make sure that there's something in there because you don't want people to come by and check it, like, four or five times in a row and see that it's empty.
Food should be a human right.
