Christine Yvette Lewis, the culture outreach coordinator for Domestic Workers United, has been named a winner of the Just Brooklyn Prize, acknowledging her unpaid contributions over the past decade. "There were times in the last 10 years when I paid the rent for the space in Crown Heights out of my own pocket... I did that unseen," she stated, highlighting the often unrecognized efforts of activists in grassroots labor movements.
The Just Brooklyn Prize, established by the Social Justice Fund founded by Clara Wu Tsai and Joe Tsai, gives recipients, including Lewis, checks for $20,000 without restrictions attached. This initiative aims to support grassroots campaigns for labor rights of domestic workers, signifying the importance of financial backing for community-driven efforts.
