Workers at Blank Street Coffee in Boston have initiated a union election, claiming they are overworked and understaffed as the chain rapidly expands. With seven locations opened since 2022, baristas report inadequate staffing despite increasing sales. Lauryn Lopez, a leading advocate for the union, emphasizes the need for a collective voice in the workplace. As the union gains support, it aims to address staffing shortages and advocate for better working conditions, reflecting a growing trend of labor organization within the coffee industry.
When you don't meet the needs of every store and keep opening more and more stores, it's very hard to staff those correctly and have everything you need to successfully run a cafe.
It is just an effort to make sure that everyone has a voice. It isn't really about someone's sole agenda of what I believe a union should be or what we should deserve. I believe that it's building something together.
