Weymouth Mayor Bob Hedlund's lighthearted proclamation renaming Hingham Bay to 'Gulf of Weymouth' sparked a humorous social media response, leading to a T-shirt fundraiser. The T-shirts, inspired by the mayor's tongue-in-cheek decree and a doctored map, sold out rapidly. Proceeds from the sales will support enhancements at the Ralph Talbot Amphitheater in honor of local veterans, reflecting the community's pride as the only U.S. town with five Medal of Honor recipients. Mayor Hedlund expressed surprise at the public's enthusiastic reaction to his playful statement.
Hedlund riffed on President Donald Trump's 'Gulf of America' renaming last month, issuing a tongue-in-cheek executive order changing the name of Hingham Bay to 'Gulf of Weymouth.' His decree was accompanied by a hastily doctored Google Maps screenshot, now featured on a T-shirt as part of a local fundraiser.
It was just sort of like the college days, you know? Kind of just fun for a lark. And so four of us put in money to get the first hundred T-shirts.
The group approached Hedlund about donating proceeds from the shirts back to the community and decided to contribute to a project already in the works to make improvements at Weymouth's Ralph Talbot Amphitheater in honor of local veterans and Medal of Honor recipients.
Hedlund said the cause seemed fitting for a number of reasons, including the military overtones of his original post and Weymouth's status as the only town in the U.S. with five Medal of Honor recipients.
