A Market Basket employee, Matthew R. Johnson, was arrested for allegedly starting two fires at the grocery store in Gloucester last week. Firefighters responded quickly, managing to extinguish the flames without any injuries reported. The store's food and packaging were discarded as a precaution, but it successfully reopened after thorough inspections by health and building officials. Gloucester's Mayor emphasized the importance of ensuring safe food access for residents and noted the effective response from public safety personnel involved.
"Ensuring our residents have access to safe and quality food remains a top priority," Gloucester Mayor Greg Verga said in the statement.
Matthew R. Johnson, 35, is charged with two counts each of burning personal property and attempting to burn a building.
