Extreme heat threatens to break records in 250+ cities this week
Briefly

The Eastern half of the U.S. is bracing for an extremely hot week, with temperatures potentially breaking records across over 250 cities. Starting June 23, 2025, large areas, especially in the central and Northeast regions, are under extreme heat warnings from the NWS. Major cities like Boston, New York City, and Washington, D.C., could see 100-degree temperatures not experienced in years. Accompanying high humidity levels exacerbate the danger, as they hinder the body's ability to cool itself, leading to higher health risks during this oppressive heat wave.
On Monday, locations like Boston, New York City, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia are under extreme heat warnings, as they are expected to experience 100-degree (or hotter) heat-a number New York's Central Park hasn't reached since the summer of 2012.
NWS says the heat risk is level 4-the highest level of extreme heat-and while in some locations the heat is expected to break by Tuesday, in others, it will be just getting started.
